William “Billy” Parker (1934 – 2023)

Some say that watercolors are the most difficult medium to produce a work of art. Its look of ease and spontaneity makes competence seem within reach but to come to this goal takes a lot of patience. The painter should understand that some of his work cannot be corrected. He must consider the learning experience from a poor painting will profit him down the road. A good watercolor puts together several elements. Composition, movement, and juxtaposition of color are the most important. Alvaro Castagnet, one of the best watercolorists of our time, told a class that “just a pretty picture will not get it.” He is a believer that a good watercolor “says something.” I am a believer in his thinking. – Billy Parker
