Alan Shuptrine

Nationally renowned artist Alan Shuptrine, is primarily known for his realistic and detailed watercolor paintings that he displays in his handmade custom frames, that he designs to the piece. 

Shuptrine is a leading practitioner in several artistic disciplines, including the centuries-old art of  water gilding with genuine gold leaf.  Shuptrine is also known for his craftsman skills of wood carving and sgraffito. His handcrafted frames can be found in the permanent collections of over 47 museums and historical institutions, alongside his period and antique restorations of gilded frames, mirrors, and other historical pieces.

Early on in his career, he learned the skills of master craftsmanship, designing and creating  one-of-a-kind gold leaf art frames, for other nationally renowned artists, including Andrew Wyeth. Now, after 35 years, his artwork hangs in over 30 museums nationwide.  Shuptrine’s work, like his father, Hubert Shuptrine (1936-2006) (Jericho the South Beheld, Oxmoor House) is collected by our nation’s museums, galleries, private art collectors, and corporate collections nationwide.

Shuptrine’s recent 2 year, solo museum exhibition launched at the Tennessee State Museum,  and showcased over 80 of his watercolor paintings that reflected generational influence as they were were accompanied with a sampling of his father’s work. Acknowledge in several publications as a top tier museum exhibition, Alan Shuptrine: Appalachian Watercolors of the Serpentine Chain was touted as the must-see museum exhibition by Watercolor Artist Magazine. The exhibition traveled on to  The Morris Museum of Art (Augusta, GA), and the Huntsville Museum of Fine Art. Shuptrine’s  The Serpentine Chain Collection  explored the idea of coming home, and being born with an instilled sense of place.  At the close of the exhibition, Shuptrine launched his award-winning fine art, coffee table book, I Come From A Place,  co-written with author and National Geographic’s Adventurer of the Year,  Jennifer Pharr Davis. Shuptrine’s art studio is located on Lookout Mountain, along with 2 other studios and galleries located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He has a passion for teaching and continues to offer private lessons, as well as offering classes and workshops for museums and private institutions, nationwide.  During 2020-21, Shuptrine continued to create bodies of work and provide private commissions, planning a 2022 Florence Italy workshop and 2023 Exhibition at the Florence Art Academy.
