Mirror & Frame Restoration and Cleaning

For over 35 years, Shuptrine’s has provided restoration and conservation services, nationwide.  As members of the American Institute of Conservation, we practice restoration of priceless antiques with minimal intervention.  We can replace and restore missing ornamentation, recreate the original gilded finish, and create an historically accurate final product.  Alan Shuptrine was asked to perform the restorations of several hundred works from the New Orleans Museum of Art permanent collection following Hurricane Katrina.  He has worked with many museums and historical institutions including The Georgia Governor’s Mansion, Melrose Plantation in Natchez National Historical Park, The Swan House on the grounds of the Atlanta History Center, The Gibbes Museum of Art, The Hunter Museum of American Art, and The James K. Polk Home and Museum.

This period portrait frame was missing extensive amounts of ornamentation and the gilded finish had been compromised and damaged.  Shuptrine’s was able to recast and recarve the ornamentation, regild the frame with a beautiful genuine gold leaf finish and then patinated to the appropriate time period of the portrait.

Master craftsman and artist, Alan Shuptrine repairs a century-old antebellum pier mirror from the permanent collection at the Tennessee State Museum in Nashville, Tennessee.

The repair and preservation of broken and missing composition ornamentation is an extensive part of the restoration process.
